These "Three Stars and a Sun” design was inspired  by the fact that it was symbol of courage of the Katipuneros who fought for the Independence of th Philippines.   The three stars signify the three principal islands of the archipelago during the time the flag was first flown: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
